Olympic champions in artistic gymnastics Simone Biles, Eli Reisman, McKayla Maroni appealed to the US Congress with a demand to dissolve the leadership of the country’s Olympic and Paralympic Committees because of the scandal involving former team doctor Larry Nassar. Sports Illustrated reports.
The gymnasts said some senior committee officials retained their positions despite the incident. In their opinion, the committee did not take action to combat sexual violence in the national teams. “The consequences of this horror still remain. And they will never disappear from my life, ”said Biles.
In September of this year, Biles criticized the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in connection with the case of pedophile doctor Nassar. The athlete testified before the US Senate, in which she accused the FBI of ignoring complaints about the doctor.
Nassar was sentenced to 175 years in prison in January. He was found guilty of sexual harassment. More than 140 female athletes have filed charges against him, including Olympic champions Biles, Reisman, Gabrielle Douglas and Maroni. Most of the victims were minors.
