Japanese Sakamoto admitted that she would be upset by the return of Russian figure skaters
Japanese figure skater Kaori Sakamoto spoke about the possible return of Russians to international tournaments. Her words are quoted by Hochi.
Sakamoto admitted that she would be upset by the return of the skaters from Russia. “But it will be a good incentive for me. It will make me feel like, ‘I can’t lose,'” she shared.
In the spring of 2023, Sakamoto stated that she was looking forward to the return of Russian athletes. “It will definitely give me motivation to work even harder,” she added.
On March 1, 2022, the International Skating Union (ISU) banned Russians and Belarusians from participating in competitions under its auspices. Due to sanctions, skaters cannot take part in the World and European Championships, as well as other international tournaments. After the Russians were suspended, Sakamoto won three world championships.
