Washington owner: there was a fear that Ovechkin would become the greatest without the Stanley Cup
The owner of the National Hockey League (NHL) Washington Capitals, Ted Leonsis, spoke about the fear of team captain Alexander Ovechkin. His words are quoted by WTOP.
“I lived in fear that Alex would become the greatest player to never win the Stanley Cup. When we won it, when I was on the ice and holding the trophy in my hands, I felt relieved,” Leonsis said. He promised to do everything possible to win another trophy.
The owner of Washington noted that they had established a simple and trusting relationship with the Russian. “The fact that this great player of a generation signed a contract with Washington and spent his entire career with us, winning individual titles, sniper races – this happens once in a lifetime,” Leonsis emphasized.
Ovechkin has been playing in the NHL since 2005, and throughout his overseas career he has played for Washington. The Russian is the 2018 Stanley Cup winner. The 38-year-old hockey player ranks second on the list of the best snipers in NHL history, with 853 goals scored in the regular season.
