Olympic hockey champion Ruzicka spoke out against Russia’s suspension
Olympic champion and former forward of the Czech national team Vladimir Ruzicka spoke out against the removal of the Russian national hockey team from international tournaments. His words are quoted by CNN Prima NEWS.
Ruzicka said that the athletes are not to blame for the current political situation. “They want to play sports and compete, and that’s the only thing they care about,” he said, adding that he does not understand the decision of some hockey federations not to call up players from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) to participate in the world championship.
On February 17, the American defender of Dynamo Moscow Brennan Menell spoke about the exclusion of Russians from international tournaments. Menell said that sanctions against the Russian team do not make sense for world hockey.
The national teams of Russia and Belarus have been suspended from international tournaments due to sanctions from the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). In particular, teams will miss the 2023 World Cup. In addition, fans were prohibited from bringing any symbols of these countries into the stands.
