Manchester City beat Fulham this Saturday, 4-0, at Craven Cottage, and took the lead in the English Championship. Gvardiol (2x), Foden and Julian Álvarez scored the goals of the game, valid for the 37th round of the competition.
Still with a game in hand, Pep Guardiola’s team overtook Arsenal in the table. Now, the team has 85 points – two more than the runner-up. Arteta’s men take the field this Sunday, against Manchester United.
Fulham, in turn, no longer has any goals in the competition. The team, which occupies 13th place with 44 points, has already escaped relegation and also no longer has a chance of winning a place in a continental competition.
Manchester City returns to the field this Tuesday, to face Tottenham, in a delayed game of the 34th round of English. Fulham faces Luton Town, only next Sunday, in the last round of the competition.
Superior on paper, City were also better on the field and opened the scoring in the first half. After just 13 minutes, defender Gvardiol, who played on the wing, received the ball from De Bruyne and, as if he were an attacker, dribbled past the marker and hit the corner to score the visitors’ first goal.
The second goal only came in the second half. In the 14th minute, Foden took advantage of a rebound from a good play by Bernardo Silva and finished in the corner to extend the score in favor of City.
Gvardiol was inspired and, in the 26th minute, found the net again. After Bernardo Silva’s cross, the Croatian appeared at the second post and threw himself onto the ball to score another goal. Akanji, who was in a questionable position, participated in the goal, which was reviewed and, shortly afterwards, confirmed by VAR.
After the third goal, Manchester City continued the attack and, in stoppage time, in the 50th minute, they scored the fourth goal. Julian Álvarez was brought down in the area by defender Diop, who was sent off by the referee. The Argentine himself took charge of the charge and moved the goalkeeper to give final figures to the match.
