Union Saint-Gilloise won a historic Belgian Cup, after 110 years, by beating Royal Antwerp 1-0 this Thursday (9), at the King Baudouin stadium, in Brussels.
The Auriazul team won thanks to a goal from Japanese national team defender Koki Machida in first-half stoppage time, in the 46th minute.
This is the third national Cup won by the ‘Unionistes’. The last title in this competition was 110 years ago, in 1914.
The players led by German coach Alexander Blessin are still fighting for the ‘double crown’ with the Belgian Cup and Belgian Championship. With three rounds left in the playoffs, USG is three points behind Club Brugge, who they will face on Monday, in the next round.
The Brussels club returned to the Belgian top flight in 2021, after a 48-year absence.
Union Saint-Gilloise has been owned since 2018 by British businessman Tony Bloom, who also owns English Premier League club Brighton.
