Zhurova said that the IOC is afraid to award Olympic medals transferred to the Russians
State Duma deputy and Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova explained the refusal of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to award medals that went to the Russians after reviewing the results of the past Games. Her words are quoted by TASS.
Zhurova said that the IOC is afraid to hold an awards ceremony, since this would require playing the Russian anthem and raising the tricolor. “They want to make us guilty because they will get protests,” she added.
The IOC’s refusal to award medals became known on May 8. The organization emphasized that the redistribution of medals should and has always been handled by the national Olympic committee of the respective athlete. They also noted that the Russian Olympic Committee was unable to return 15 medals to the IOC, which were taken from the country’s representatives.
In 2018, the IOC recognized the Russian rower Ilya Shtokalov as the bronze medalist of the 2016 Games after the disqualification of Moldovan Sergei Tarnovsky. In March of this year, the Russian said that he never received a medal.
