Conmebol postpones Grêmio and Internacional games due to rain in Porto Alegre

Conmebol announced this Saturday the postponement of the games between Huachipato-CHI and Grêmio, for the Libertadores, and Real Tomayapo-BOL and Internacional, for the Sul-Americana.

The decision was taken due to the heavy rains that are punishing Rio Grande do Sul, especially Porto Alegre. On May 2, the government declared a State of Emergency.

To date, 55 people have died and more than 350,000 people are without electricity as a result of the floods.

Furthermore, Salgado Filho International Airport is flooded and operations are suspended indefinitely. The roads leaving Porto Alegre and arriving at the airport are also affected and closed.

The match between Huachipato and Grêmio, in the fourth round of the Libertadores group stage, was initially scheduled for next Wednesday, in Chile. The game between Real Tomayapo and Internacional, in the fourth round of the South American group stage, was scheduled for Tuesday, in Bolivia.

Conmebol did not disclose the new dates, but promised to announce them soon.

“We stand in solidarity with the entire State of Rio Grande do Sul and express our support for the situation they are going through,” the entity wrote.

Grêmio and Internacional also had their respective Brazilian Championship and Copa do Brasil games postponed, as did Juventude.
