Parma guarantees return to the elite of Italian football after three years of absence

Parma, leader of Italian Serie B, secured this Wednesday, with a 1-1 draw against Bari, their mathematical promotion to Serie A after three years outside the main category of Italian football.

With two rounds left of the season, Parma has 74 points, seven more than Venezia (3rd), who can no longer catch up. The team thus guarantees one of the top two positions, which gives direct access to Serie A.

Parma is a traditional “Calcio” club and has had big names, such as goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, Frenchman Lilian Thuram, Argentinean Hernán Crespo and Brazilian Adriano.

He was never Italian champion, but he won three Italian Cup titles (1992, 1999 and 2002), one in the extinct European Cup (1993) and two in the UEFA Cup, the direct predecessor of the current Europa League (1995 and 1999).

Parma could soon be joined in the First Division by Como, who are in second place, three points behind the leader.

The third spot for Serie A will be awarded after a playoff that will feature six teams.

At the moment, only one team is mathematically relegated from Serie A to Serie B: Salernitana, currently bottom of the Italian First Division.
