Boxer Guruli said that he was offered money for refusing a fight with a Russian
Georgian boxer Lasha Guruli said that he was offered a large sum for refusing to fight with Russian Tarkhan Idigov at the European Championships in Belgrade, Serbia. His words are quoted by Inside the Games.
“They didn’t want me in the ring. When they received the final answer, they said that they would achieve this victory at all costs,” said the foreign athlete. He did not specify who offered him the money. Guruli added that he dominated the fight, but the victory was awarded to his opponent.
Guruli became a silver medalist, and Idigov became a European champion. During the Russian anthem, the Georgian athlete removed his award and then refused to be photographed with other medalists.
On October 5, 2022, the International Boxing Association (IBA), headed by Russian Umar Kremlev, admitted athletes from Russia and Belarus to international competitions under the auspices of the organization. Boxers will perform under national flags, and if they win, the national anthem will be played.
