Tretiak advised Ovechkin to take a calmer approach to the pursuit of Gretzky’s record
President of the Russian Hockey Federation (RHF) Vladislav Tretyak gave advice to Russian Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin regarding the pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s record for the most goals in the regular championships of the National Hockey League (NHL). His words are quoted by TASS.
The head of the FHR recommended that the striker take a calmer approach to the assault on the achievement. “We all want him to score all the goals too quickly. There will be time, he will set a record. Let’s wish him good luck, he’s a great player,” Tretyak said.
He also recalled that Ovechkin has a great responsibility. “He probably reads the Russian press, and it’s hard for him because they’re always expecting goals from him. And when he doesn’t score, he’s probably a little nervous,” Tretyak noted.
During his NHL career, Ovechkin scored 853 goals in the regular season. The record for this indicator belongs to Gretzky, who scored 894 goals.
