The anthem was switched off at the award ceremony for European boxing champion Russian Chumgalakova
The Russian anthem was switched off during the award ceremony for Russian Yulia Chumgalakova, who won the European Boxing Championships in Belgrade. TASS reports this.
After the anthem stopped, the audience finished singing it without music. At this moment, the Russian woman could not hold back her tears. “Nothing knocked me down, we all finished singing the anthem. I’m glad to become European champion. We prepared and accomplished what we planned,” said the athlete.
Chumgalakova won a gold medal in the weight category up to 48 kilograms. In the final, she defeated the representative of Serbia, Kristina Varga. For the Russian, this is the second gold medal at continental championships. She previously won the 2019 European Championships in the same weight category.
The European Boxing Championship will last in Belgrade until April 28. The Russians perform at this tournament under the flag and with the national anthem.
Previously, Russian boxers refused to qualify for the Olympics in Paris. Domestic athletes will not perform at the qualifying tournaments due to the need to obtain neutral status.
