IOC: Russians will be disqualified for displaying the flag or Z symbol at the Olympics
The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, named the conditions for the disqualification of Russian athletes at the 2024 Games in Paris. His words are quoted by AFP.
Bach said political actions are prohibited during competitions or awards ceremonies. “If a Russian athlete displays a flag or a Z symbol, a disciplinary procedure will be initiated, which could lead to disqualification,” he said.
On April 25, the head of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports, Dmitry Svishchev, said that sanctions would not be introduced against Russian athletes for participating in the 2024 Olympic Games. He emphasized that the country’s leadership will respect the athletes’ decision.
In December 2023, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Games in Paris. Athletes will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
