Bayer Leverkusen, with their first Bundesliga title already secured, got a draw in stoppage time this Sunday (21) in a 1-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund, thus continuing their impressive streak without losing.
With their first league title in 120 years of existence secured seven days ago, Leverkusen trailed 1-0 after Niclas Fullkrug’s excellent 81st-minute strike, but equalized in the seventh minute of stoppage time through Croatian Josip Stanisic.
The players led by coach Xabi Alonso are, without a doubt, the kings of stoppage time this season, as this Sunday they scored the 14th goal (counting all competitions) outside of regulation time, this time at the Westfalenstadion (and the 28th after the 80th minute ).
Taking all competitions into account, Leverkusen has gone 45 games without losing.
“On a mental level it’s never easy when you’re already champion. But we have our own challenges, one of them is remaining undefeated throughout the season,” explained Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka in an interview with DAZN.
The club from the outskirts of Cologne can still join Perugia (30 games in 1978/79), Milan (34 in 1991/92), Juventus (38 in 2011/12) and Arsenal (38 in 2003/04) on the select list of the only five major leagues (Spain, England, Germany, Italy and France) to complete a season without losing in the championship since 1945.
