The swimmer who refused the Olympics appreciated Efimova’s desire to go to Paris

Swimmer Chikunova said she respects Efimova’s desire to go to the Olympics

World record holder in swimming Evgenia Chikunova, who refused to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games, appreciated the desire of compatriot Yulia Efimova to go to Paris. Her words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

The athlete said that she is not offended by the idea that swimmers weaker than her will be able to win a medal at the Olympics, including Efimova. She emphasized that she respects the swimmer’s opinion, but does not agree with it. “I will be an individual athlete outside the competition, without the opening and closing ceremonies, without media comments – it’s just… very offensive,” Chikunova said.

On April 3, Chikunova refused to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games. The athlete noted that she considers the conditions for admitting Russian athletes to competitions unacceptable.

Last April, Chikunova set a new world record at the Russian Championships in Kazan. She swam the 200-meter backstroke in 2 minutes and 17.55 seconds.
