ARD: 23 Chinese swimmers caught doping and were allowed to participate in the 2020 Olympics
23 Chinese swimmers were caught doping and were allowed to compete in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. This was reported by The New York Times and ARD based on the results of their own investigations.
According to the source, trimetazidine was detected in athletes’ samples in January 2021. Among them were the team leaders Zhang Yufei, Wang Shun and Qin Haiyang. The Chinese Anti-Doping Agency conducted an investigation during which it was determined that traces of the drug were found in the kitchen of the hotel where the athletes stayed during the competition.
It is noted that the International Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accepted this explanation. The organization did not punish the swimmers, allowing them to compete at the 2020 Olympics.
The Tokyo Olympics have been postponed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The games took place from July 23 to August 8. Chinese swimmers won three gold medals, two silver and one bronze at the competition.
