Mayorov said he was sick of the news about Ovechkin’s pursuit of Gretzky’s record
Two-time Olympic hockey champion Boris Mayorov said that he was sick of the news about Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin’s pursuit of Canadian Wayne Gretzky’s record for goals in the league’s regular season. His words are quoted by Match TV.
Mayorov said that he follows Russian NHL players, but journalists write only about Ovechkin’s successes. “It seems that we have no other hockey players. Will he break Gretzky’s record or not? Well, how many trees and sticks can you have?” — the legend of Soviet hockey asked himself.
Ovechkin played 79 matches in the NHL regular season this season. He has 31 goals and 34 assists. The Russian continues to chase Gretzky’s record for most goals in the regular season. Before reaching the Canadian goal (894 goals), the forward has 41 accurate shots left.
Ovechkin has been playing for the Capitals since 2005. Together with the club, he won the Stanley Cup in 2018.
