Deputy Vyacheslav Fetisov said that he was hated because of his nationality in the United States
Two-time Olympic champion and State Duma deputy Vyacheslav Fetisov said that he was hated because of his nationality after moving to the United States. His words are quoted by Sport Express.
Fetisov recalled that in 1989, when he began playing for the National Hockey League (NHL) club New Jersey, other hockey players in the locker room did not like him. “You could have been offended and run away, but the other option was to prove that the West was wrong,” he emphasized.
In 2022, Fetisov said that in the USA he was bullied both in the press and among his teammates. He emphasized that the Americans were intimidated by Soviet atomic bombs.
Fetisov played in the NHL from 1989 to 1998. He played for the New Jersey Devils and the Detroit Red Wings, with whom he won the Stanley Cup twice.
