Gretzky congratulated Kucherov on his record 100 assists in the NHL regular season
Four-time Stanley Cup winner Wayne Gretzky congratulated Russian Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov on a new record in the National Hockey League (NHL). The club’s coach John Cooper spoke about this at a press conference.
Cooper recalled that Gretzky managed to make 100 or more assists in 11 regular seasons. “The first message I received today after the match was from him. He praised Nikita Kucherov. It was very cool,” the coach said.
Kucherov became the first Russian in NHL history to make 100 assists in one regular season. In total, five players in the league were able to achieve this figure: Kucherov, Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Mario Lemieux and Connor McDavid, who also distinguished himself this season.
Kucherov has been playing for Tampa since 2013. Together with the team, the Russian won the Stanley Cup twice.
