Macron on admission to the Games: Israel, unlike Russia, is not an attacking party
French President Emmanuel Macron spoke about the difference in the conditions for the participation of Israel and Russia in the 2024 Olympic Games. His words are quoted by RMC Sport.
Macron said that Israel, unlike Russia, is not an attacker. “Israel is the victim of a terrorist attack and is responding to it,” he explained.
Earlier, French MP Edouard Benard called for Israel to be removed from the Olympics. The same proposal was made by the left-wing coalition bloc of Spain Sumar.
In December 2023, Russians and Belarusians were allowed to participate in the Games in Paris as individual neutral athletes. However, athletes who support the SVO, or those with connections to the armed forces or security agencies, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
The International Olympic Committee said Israeli athletes cannot be held responsible for the actions of their governments. The organization explained the sanctions against Russian athletes by the beginning of the SVO during the 2022 Olympics and Paralympics, when the Olympic truce was in effect.
