CSKA fired head coach Raikovich before the start of the VTB United League playoffs
Basketball CSKA fired head coach Emil Raikovich before the start of the VTB United League playoffs. This was reported on the team’s website.
Andreas Pistiolis became the new head coach of the Moscow team. The contract with the Greek specialist runs until the end of the current season.
Raikovich expressed gratitude to the club and its president Andrei Vatutin. “During these two years we had many victories and a large number of pleasant moments that will remain in my memory. Now I want to thank my staff, the players and, no less important, the CSKA fans, who always supported us in every match,” he said.
Vatutin called the decision to change coaches difficult. “Now, despite the fact that until the last round we fought for leadership in the very competitive regular championship of the VTB League, the results of the second round and, most importantly, the quality of the game do not suit either the club or the fans,” explained the head of the team.
The Macedonian specialist will head CSKA in the summer of 2022. In the 2022/2023 season, under the leadership of Raikovich, CSKA became the winner of the regular season and the bronze medalist of the VTB United League.
Pistiolis previously worked at CSKA Moscow from 2014 to 2022 as the first assistant to head coach Dimitris Itoudis. Together with him, the team won the Euroleague twice and became the best in the VTB United League six times. Afterwards, Pistiolis made his debut as a head coach in the Turkish Galatasaray.
