The RFU stated that it is seeking the return of the Russian national team to international tournaments
Advisor to the President of the Russian Football Union (RFU), Alexey Sorokin, named the organization’s position during negotiations with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and the International Football Federation (FIFA). His words are quoted by Sport Express.
Sorokin said that the RFU is trying to achieve the return of the Russian national team to international tournaments. “Every effort must be made to achieve this goal,” he stressed.
In December 2023, all members of the RFU executive committee considered it pointless to move to Asia without guarantees from FIFA. It was decided that the organization will continue to contact UEFA upon the return of Russians to tournaments.
On February 28, 2022, FIFA and UEFA excluded Russian national teams and clubs from international tournaments. Clubs do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team lost the opportunity to compete for access to the final part of the 2022 World Cup and did not participate in the Euro 2024 qualifications.
