The Slovak Hockey Federation refused to invite players from the KHL to the 2024 World Cup
The Slovak Hockey Federation has decided not to call up players from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) for the 2024 World Championships, which will be held in the Czech Republic. This is reported on the organization’s website.
It is clarified that this issue was considered at a meeting of the executive committee of the federation. Its members decided that any hockey players who are citizens of the country could play for the national team. “However, due to the fact that the current Slovak hockey players playing in the KHL are unavailable for the needs of the national team, a decision has been made not to call them up,” the statement said.
Nine players from Slovakia played in the KHL this season. Of these, only defender Martin Gernat from Lokomotiv continues to fight for the Gagarin Cup.
The 2024 Ice Hockey World Championship will be held in Prague and Ostrava from May 10 to 26. The Russian national team has been suspended from all international competitions.
