Salnikov: no one will prevent Efimova from obtaining neutral status
President of the All-Russian Swimming Federation Vladimir Salnikov responded to Yulia Efimova’s desire to obtain neutral status to compete at the 2024 Olympic Games. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Salnikov said that no one would prevent Efimova from obtaining neutral status. “From the very beginning, we had a decision from the presidium that we would not make any claims against the athletes’ decision. This is their business,” he said.
Earlier, Efimova said that she plans to apply for neutral status, but does not yet see the point in this, since she is not in optimal shape.
Efimova is a six-time world champion. She also won bronze at the 2012 Olympics in London and two silvers at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
On September 4, 2023, the World Aquatics bureau allowed Russian athletes to participate in tournaments in a neutral status. Athletes will only be able to take part in events where the time or result is determined by the performance of one swimmer. A maximum of one athlete from Russia per discipline will be allowed to compete.
