Inter Miami is eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup. In the early hours of this Thursday, the American team, even with the return of Lionel Messi, lost to Monterrey-MEX 3-1 in the return game and said goodbye to the competition in the quarterfinals.
In a match played at the BBVA Stadium, Brandon Vázquez, Germán Berterame and Jesús Gallardo scored the goals for the Mexican team, while Diego Gómez scored for the North Americans. Neither Messi nor Suárez managed to prevent the team’s elimination from MLS. At the end of the game, Jordi Alba was sent off.
With the result, Inter Miami ended up being eliminated by Monterrey with an aggregate score of 5-2 – they had already been defeated in the first duel, in the United States, by 2-1. The Mexican team will now face the Columbus Crew in the semi-finals, with dates and times to be confirmed.
To recover this season, Messi’s Inter Miami returns to the field this Saturday. The team visits Sporting KC at 9:30 pm (Brasília time), at Arrowhead Stadium, in the eighth round of the MLS Eastern Conference.
Monterrey hosts Tigres this Sunday in the Liga MX – Clausura. The ball starts at 00:10, also at the BBVA Stadium, for the 15th round of the competition.
The goals of the game
The first goal of this Thursday’s clash came in the 31st minute of the first half. Goalkeeper Callender played the wrong way and delivered a pass to Vázques’ feet inside the penalty area. The player, of course, only had the job of pushing it into the back of the net and opening the score: 1-0.
Monterrey’s second goal in the duel was a great goal. Arteaga advanced on the left side and passed it to Berterame, who appeared at the edge of the penalty area. The Mexican team’s number 9 cut the Inter Miami defender and shot hard towards the goal. The ball even hit the crossbar before ending up in the back of the net.
Finally, the goal that closed the score in Mexico happened again after a wrong exit from Inter Miami. The defense kicked forward, but the ball exploded off an athlete from the Mexican team and ended up at Berterame’s feet. The striker crossed the ball for Jesus Gallardo, alone, to head the ball home and complete the victory at 3-0.
