“It would be good”, says Xabi Alonso about coaching a Premier League team in the future

Currently in charge of Bayer Leverkusen, Spanish coach Xabi Alonso, leader of the Bundesliga with the German team undefeated so far (24 wins and four draws), has already rejected proposals from Liverpool and Bayer Munich. However, in a press conference before the game against West Ham in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, he once again commented on his future and stated that he would like to manage a Premier League team.

“You never know. At the moment I already have a lot to think about, but I’m still a young coach and of course it would be good. I speak regularly to some colleagues who coach in the Premier League and they know that every game is very complicated to prepare for and to play. It’s a very exciting competition, with great players, coaches, clubs and stadiums, and West Ham is one of them”, he said.

“We will play with them tomorrow, with great respect, but also with great enthusiasm, as we have the opportunity to advance in the competition and continue having a great season”, added the coach, who continues without losing in the 2023/24 season.

Finally, despite the possibility of being mathematically champion in the next round of the German Championship, Xabi Alonso stated that the focus is on the match against the English club.

“We are only thinking about tomorrow’s game. Then we will have enough time to focus on the Bundesliga. We know what West Ham can do. They are a team with experience in Europe. Last season they were champions of the Conference League. We want to advance in the competition. We have to play our game and we are ready”, he concluded.

The first leg of the quarter-finals takes place this Thursday, at 4 pm (Brasília time), at BayArena. The return game will be on the 18th (Thursday), also at 4 pm (Brasília time), this time at the Olympic Stadium in London.

Finally, to be champion of the German Championship this weekend, the team, currently with 76 points, 16 more than Bayern, needs to achieve the same result as the Bavarians, as there are only six rounds left until the end of the competition. (18 points up for grabs). The leaders duel with Werder Bremen on Sunday, at 12:30 pm (Brasília time), at the BayArena, while Bayern, on Saturday, hosts Cologne at the Allianz Arena, at 10:30 am (Brasília time).
