The swimming part of the triathlon at the Paris Olympics is in jeopardy
Part of the triathlon competitions at the Paris Olympics was in jeopardy. This was announced by the head of the Games organizing committee, Tony Estangue, as quoted by The Guardian.
Estanguet admitted that the swimming portion of the triathlon could be canceled due to water quality in the Seine River. He explained that when there is heavy rain, the levels of E. coli in the water increase.
Estangue added that the organizing committee has developed a contingency plan. One of the options is considering postponing the start of competitions at the Games to a later date.
Earlier, ecologists conducted tests and found that the water quality in the Seine still does not meet the standards recommended for swimming. Scientists have pointed out the risks for athletes who will take part in triathlon and open water swimming competitions.
Swimming in the Seine has been prohibited since 1923, due in part to high concentrations of E. coli and other bacteria. It was planned to clean the river by the beginning of the Olympics.
The Olympic Games are scheduled to take place in Paris from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
