Memphis Depay misses Atlético de Madrid against Dortmund in the Champions League

Atletico Madrid’s Dutch striker Memphis Depay has suffered a muscle injury to his left leg, meaning he will miss the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.

“Memphis Depay suffered a muscle injury to his left leg, as confirmed by the various tests the Dutch striker underwent,” the team said in a statement released on Monday.

Depay was injured during training last Saturday, feeling discomfort at the end of the session.

The Spanish team did not specify how long the player will be out, limiting themselves to stating that “the evolution of his injury will determine his return to work with the group”. However, according to the local press, Depay may need a recovery period of around three weeks.

Thus, Memphis would lose both the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid and the second leg next week in Germany.

The injury is a heavy blow for Atlético de Madrid, who lose a striker that Argentine coach Diego Simeone has used regularly.
