Leader Bayer Leverkusen beat Union Berlin (12th) away from home 1-0 this Saturday (6) and is now one victory away from winning the club’s first title. German Championship in its history, after Bayern Munich’s 3-2 defeat to Heidenheim.
With six rounds to go before the end of the season, Leverkusen has a 16 point advantage over Bayern and could mathematically become champions next Sunday, if they beat Werder Bremen (11th) at home.
The title could even come a day earlier, without the team taking the field, in the event of Bayern’s defeat to Cologne (17th).
With numerical superiority since the end of the first half due to the expulsion of midfielder Robin Gosens (45’+3), Bayer Leverkusen scored the winning goal with Florian Wirtz taking a penalty (45’+8).
“It’s a great opportunity, a great joy. We worked hard to get here, but we still have 90 minutes to play. In between we will have a Europa League game [ida das quartas de final contra o West Ham, na quinta-feira]but we are in a good position,” Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes told Sky.
