FTR called criticism of Russian tennis players wanting to go to the Games ill-considered
The Russian Tennis Federation (RFT) made a statement after criticism of domestic athletes who want to go to the 2024 Olympic Games. It is available on the organization’s website.
The FTR called such words thoughtless and incorrect, as they create a split in the sports family and pit representatives of different sports against each other. “Unfortunately, the statements of some participants in these discussions cross the line of what is acceptable, affecting not only the interests, but also the human dignity of our athletes,” the message emphasized.
The organization promised to do everything possible to ensure a worthy performance of Russians at the world’s largest competitions. It is noted that fans also continue to support domestic athletes.
On April 5, the head of the Russian Olympic Committee, Stanislav Pozdnyakov, called Russian tennis players who wanted to compete at the Games a team of foreign agents. He noted that tennis players living and earning money abroad claim that they play for themselves and condemn the policies of their country and the Central Military District.
Russians and Belarusians were allowed to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
