Peskov in response to Wiener: athletes themselves make the decision to participate in the Olympics
Press Secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin Dmitry Peskov responded to the proposal of the head of the All-Russian Federation of Rhythmic Gymnastics Irina Viner to hold a council on the non-participation of Russian athletes in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. His words are quoted by RBC.
Peskov recalled that Putin said that athletes themselves make the decision to participate in the Olympics. He emphasized that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) promised not to force domestic athletes not to sign papers against the Russian authorities.
Earlier on April 6, Wiener called for a council to be held to make a decision on the non-participation of Russian athletes in the Olympics. In her opinion, by participating in the Games, athletes are trampling on Russian history and the present.
Last December, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Paris Olympics as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
