Benfica coach does not guarantee Di María’s stay for next season

Di María began his career in Europe at Benfica and, after success at other major European clubs, chose to return to the Portuguese club this season. The player is one of the team’s main highlights, however, coach Roger Schmidt did not guarantee the Argentine’s stay next season.

“Ángel’s situation is quite clear. When he came in the summer it was something big for us, for the fans and for football, because it’s a fantastic story. Starting in Europe as an Argentine at Benfica and after a great career returning to Benfica, and continue to play at the highest level”, he said.

“His plan was to play one season at Benfica and then maybe make another decision. I don’t know what he wants, but he’s still in great shape, he’s a fantastic player, a key player for us, I have all the respect for him. He “He’ll make the decision with his family and we’ll see what it will be. It would be good to keep a player like him in the summer, but I don’t know if it’s possible,” he added.

Last week, a possible return for Di María to Rosario Central, the club where he was revealed, was practically ruled out. He saw his family, who were in Rosário, his hometown, receive a threatening message, in which he said that if he the athlete returned, they would kill one of his family members.

Roger Schmidt revealed that he spoke to the star about the matter, and revealed that he would have been very “affected”.

“Last week we had this situation in his country, we talked about it, he was obviously affected, but we haven’t talked about what will happen next season”, he said.

At 36 years old, Di María has played 41 matches this season, with 15 goals scored and 12 assists distributed. His next commitment with Benfica will be this Saturday, in a Portuguese classic against Sporting.
