Peskov on IOC statements about tournaments in Russia: this is a usurpation of the right to sports

Kremlin official Dmitry Peskov appreciated the statements of the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach about tournaments in Russia. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

“We cannot agree, of course, with Mr. Bach’s attitude towards Russia’s plans to host major international sporting events, this is such a usurpation of the right to sport, to the spirit of sport, it is unacceptable to anyone,” said the press secretary of the Russian President.

Peskov noted that the IOC head’s unwillingness and reluctance to dissociate himself from politics is detrimental to the Olympic movement.

Earlier, the IOC called the Friendship Games a politicized event of the Russian government. The organization called on all participants in the Olympic movement to refuse to participate in the competition.

The Friendship Games will take place in September 2024 in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. The tournament will include competitions in 33 summer Olympic and non-Olympic sports. In February, Russian Deputy Sports Minister Alexei Morozov said that representatives from 34 countries would take part in the tournament.
