Svetlana Zhurova called Ukrainians’ surveillance of Russians at the request of the IOC terrible
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova appreciated the request of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to Ukrainians to monitor the statements of Russians. Her words are quoted by TASS.
Zhurova called the IOC’s call for spying on athletes one another terrible. “These are their values, we don’t understand this, but for them this is generally the norm,” she noted.
According to her, as a result, Russian athletes may not be allowed to participate in the Olympic Games because of a like on her social media post about a child’s victory. “They may see this like when the athlete comes to the Olympics, but it is unlikely that those who are going to the Olympics now will give me likes,” Zhurova added.
Earlier, IOC head Thomas Bach spoke about the creation of a special commission that monitors statements by Russian athletes in the media and on the Internet. The Ukrainian side is also involved in this.
In December 2023, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Olympics in Paris as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
