Departure between Udinese and Salernitana is postponed by covid-19 outbreak

Another European tournament suffered again from the covid-19 pandemic. The match between Udinese and Salernitana, which would open the 19th round of the Italian Championship, was postponed by an outbreak of illness among the athletes of the visiting team.

The players were confined by health agencies before boarding for Udine and, therefore, did not travel to the Friuli stadium, the venue for the game scheduled for 2:30 pm (GMT) on Tuesday.

Last Monday night, when the team was confined, Salernitana published an official statement.

“US Salernitana 1919, after a positive covid response from the group of players, takes note of the provisions of the Salerno ASL, which requested the suspension of the team’s activity and prohibited its participation in sporting events. The club communicated these provisions to the Serie A League and is available for any type of assessment by the local health authorities”, he announced.

Udinese even communicated that the confinement would not cancel the departure and that the visitors had booked a flight for this Tuesday morning. This scenario, however, was not confirmed and the game did not take place.

Salernitana is still experiencing a crisis off the field, as it has only ten days to introduce a new owner to the club. If the sale is not executed, the team will end up expelled from the Italian Serie A.
