Liverpool beats Brighton and takes sole lead in the English Championship

This Sunday morning, the Liverpool hosted Brighton, at Anfield, in Liverpool (ING), for the 30th round of the English Championshipand won 2-1. Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for the visitors, but Luis Díaz and Salah turned it around for the home team.

With the result, the Reds reach 67 points and take the provisional lead of Nacional. Now, the team led by Jurgen Klopp is supporting Arsenal — second with 64 — in this afternoon’s clash against Manchester City — third with 63 — to remain at the top of the table.

In turn, Brighton were defeated again in the tournament and remain with 42 units, in ninth place. The distance to Manchester United, which opens the classification zone for the European leagues, is six points.

In the next round, therefore, Liverpool will face Sheffield United, at 3:30 pm (Brasília time) on Thursday, again at home. The previous afternoon, Brighton visits Brentford, also from 3:30 pm, at the Brentford Community Stadium, in Brentford (ING).

Even with Liverpool in the fierce fight for the title, Brighton were not intimidated and needed just 1 minute and 26 seconds to open the scoring at Anfield. Danny Welbeck took advantage of the ball inside the area and sent a bomb, with no chance for Kelleher.

The Reds’ response came at 27 in the first half. After a partial cut by the visiting defense on a corner kick, Salah returned the ball to the area and Luis Díaz appeared by surprise to touch it before goalkeeper Verbruggen and score.

The home team’s comeback came in the second half. At 20 minutes, Szoboszlai activated Mac Allister in the central region, at the entrance. The Argentine midfielder dominated and saw Salah, who didn’t miss a beat and put Liverpool ahead on the scoreboard.

Seven minutes later, Jurgen Klopp’s team finally scored the third goal, again with Luis Díaz, who took advantage of Salah’s beautiful pass in the area. However, the VAR invalidated the move due to the Colombian striker being offside.
