Tottenham manager praises Richarlison for talking about mental health

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has praised Brazilian striker Richarlison for speaking out about the mental health issues he has faced recently.

The player explained in an interview with ESPN the state of depression that he experienced after the 2022 World Cup, in which Brazil was eliminated on penalties by Croatia in the quarter-finals.

“Above all, players are human beings. The impact is greater when it is someone important, who is in a position where they are assumed to have no problems, or who might be perceived as a sign of weakness if they ask for help or support. This gives more merit”, said the Australian coach.

“He could have done it privately, obviously, but I think doing it in public was a brave thing. I hope this can help others to ask for help if they need it. It’s a good thing for Richy to have asked for help, to have gotten it, and now wanting others to achieve it too”, he stated.

Richarlison recently celebrated the arrival of psychologist Marisa Santiago to the Brazilian team, explaining that the therapy “saved her life” after the crisis she suffered in 2023 due to criticism of her performance and several personal problems.

“It is important for the Seleção to have a psychologist to help the athletes. Only we know the pressure they are under, not only on, but also off the field”, said the Brazilian striker at a press conference in London.

On Saturday, Tottenham visits Luton Town in the 30th round of the English Championship. Spurs need victory to avoid falling behind in the race for a place in the next edition of the Champions League.
