Zhurova: I suspect that athletes from the Russian Federation are unlikely to go to the 2024 Olympic Games
First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova doubted the participation of Russians in the 2024 Games. She is quoted by RIA Novosti.
“Here we are breaking spears with each other, one says a harsher wording, the other a softer one. But I have a suspicion that the athletes are unlikely to go anywhere at all,” said Zhurova. In her opinion, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is trying to split Russian society.
On March 1, Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin stood up for representatives of the country who want to compete at the 2024 Summer Games. In his opinion, the athletes participating in the selection for the tournament are the treasure of the country.
In December 2023, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Olympics in Paris as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, as well as those who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus, will not be allowed to participate in the competition. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
