Rodnina said that the 2024 Games will not be the number one topic for Russians
Three-time Olympic champion, State Duma deputy Irina Rodnina announced the changed attitude of Russians towards the Olympic Games. Her words are quoted by Sport24.
“The games in Paris will not be the number one topic for Russians, as they were before,” Rodnina considered. In her opinion, after pressure from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Russians may be unpleasant to look at the small number of domestic neutral athletes.
Earlier on March 26, the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that any domestic athlete who condemned a special military operation (SVO) for the sake of the Olympics “would become a fiend.” At the same time, he emphasized that the IOC removed this condition from the requirements, which means that Russians can go to the Games.
In December 2023, the IOC decided to admit Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, or who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in the 2024 Games. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
