Ivory Coast coach Emerse Faé said this Monday, the eve of the friendly against Uruguaythat Celeste is the best South American team currently.
“Against Benin, we didn’t play as we would have liked, as we should, because now we are champions of Africa,” said Faé about the recent 2-2 draw with Benin, speaking to AFP.
“Tomorrow, we have a good opportunity against a great South American team, I believe the best South American team at the moment”, added the coach. Faé took over the Ivorian national team in the middle of the African Cup of Nations campaign in February, and won the title after beating Nigeria in the final 2-1.

Faé considers the friendly against Uruguay “a good opportunity to show that African football has something to say to world football, that Africa is taken seriously. A positive result against a team like Uruguay will be a good sign.”
The commander of the Ivorian national team also did not spare praise for Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa, who has led Uruguay since last year.
“Uruguay, nowadays, plays like Bielsa used to play against Olympique de Marseille. It’s a team that puts a lot of aggression, a lot of intensity into its game, that projects very quickly to recover the ball. It’s true that Bielsa hasn’t been there he has been in charge of the team for a long time, but you can see that it is a team prepared by him”, declared Faé.
