The RFU said that Russia still has a chance to compete in the next UEFA cycle
General Secretary of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Maxim Mitrofanov revealed the content of negotiations with the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) on the return of domestic teams. His words are quoted by Bookmakers Rating.
“Our conversation with them is based on the subject: “Colleagues, allow us into the next reasonable selection cycle,” Mitrofanov said. He emphasized that the Russian team is no longer qualifying for the European Championship in 2024, but there remains a chance to compete in the next cycle.
On March 22, Mitrofanov said that Russia will not join the Asian Football Confederation, since UEFA is the richest confederation in the world. He emphasized that UEFA annually invests in the RFU an amount three times greater than that received by the winner of the Asian Champions League.
On February 28, 2022, the International Football Federation and UEFA excluded Russian national teams and clubs from international tournaments. Teams do not compete in European competitions, and the Russian national team lost the opportunity to compete for access to the final part of the 2022 World Cup and did not participate in the Euro 2024 qualifications.
