This Monday, Nottingham Forest was punished for violating the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSRs) of the English Championship and lost four points in the competition.
The team was referred to an independent committee on January 15 this year after the club admitted it had breached the financial rules limit of £61 million by £34.5 million. 23 million) in 2022/23.
The limit was lower than the basic £105 million as the club spent two seasons of the assessment period (the last three years) competing in the second tier of the English Championship.
Because of this, the club owned by Brazilians Danilo and Murilo, former Palmeiras and Corinthians players, fell from 17th to 18th position and now occupies the Premier League relegation zone. Nottingham Forest, with 21 points, is one behind Luton Town, the first outside the relegation zone.
The decision was taken after two days of hearings this March. Despite the committee saying Forest demonstrated “exceptional cooperation”, they assess the club’s breach as “serious”.
“The four-point sanction is not to punish Forest, but to be fair to other clubs; to give the public confidence that when a club invests like Forest did to compete in the Premier League, it still needs to meet the PSR threshold for losses,” the league said in a statement.
To make up for lost points, Nottingham Forest will take the field on March 30th against Crystal Palace, at home, in the 30th round of the English Championship.
