The RFU explained Karpin’s call for football players to go to Europe

Mitrofanov said that Karpin did not encourage players to go to Europe for the sake of leaving

General Secretary of the Russian Football Union (RFU) Maxim Mitrofanov explained the call of the head coach of the national team Valery Karpin for the players to go to Europe. His words are quoted by “Championship”.

According to the functionary, the specialist was addressing those who had outgrown the level of the Russian Premier League (RPL). “This means that he needs to move on, in order, among other things, to benefit the national team and set an example. Karpin did not mean that we had to leave for the sake of leaving,” Mitrofanov said.

In September 2023, Karpin called on Russian players to leave for European clubs. The coach added that he feels the difference between the level of the national team players who play in Europe and those who remain at home.

Karpin’s words caused discontent among some football officials. Honorary President of the RFU Vyacheslav Koloskov said that this will lead to an outflow of talented players from Russia.
