Gilles calls Canada’s decision to appeal the 2022 Olympics result “stunning”
Canadian figure skater Piper Gilles, who competes in ice dancing with Paul Poirier, spoke out about depriving the Russian team of bronze in the team tournament at the 2022 Olympic Games. Her words are quoted by Reuters.
The athlete called Canada’s decision to appeal the Olympic result shocking. She considered that the decision concerns all athletes who did not dope from an early age. “This is about more than just a medal,” she said.
On February 26, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) registered four appeals against the redistribution of team tournament medals. Three of them were sent from Russia with a request to leave the team gold, another – from Canada with a demand to award them bronze.
On January 30, the medals were redistributed due to the disqualification and cancellation of the results of the Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva, who violated anti-doping rules. The Russian team moved from first to third place, gold went to the USA, silver to Japan.
