Plushenko spoke out against Russia’s possible boycott of the Paris Olympics
Two-time Olympic figure skating champion Evgeni Plushenko assessed Russia’s possible boycott of the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. His words are quoted by TASS.
He opposed this decision. “The whole country and the whole world understand very well which country the athlete is from. We just have to prove to the whole world that we cannot be knocked down or intimidated by sanctions and exclusion from the world stage,” Plushenko said.
Previously, Russian boxers, as well as representatives of artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, abandoned attempts to qualify for the Games. According to athletes and federation leadership, performing in a neutral status is unacceptable.
Earlier, James MacLeod, director of the department for relations with national Olympic committees of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), announced that Russians and Belarusians would not be allowed to participate in the opening ceremony of the Games. He also noted that a maximum of 55 athletes from Russia will be able to qualify for the Olympic Games.
