The IOC banned Russians from participating in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Games in Paris
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has banned Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Games in Paris. The director of the department for relations with the national Olympic committees of the organization, James MacLeod, told TASS.
He noted that representatives of the countries will not take part in the parade of athletes. “But they will have the opportunity to attend the opening ceremony,” the functionary said.
On March 15, representatives of the national Olympic committees of the Baltic countries (Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia) opposed the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the opening ceremony of the Olympics. The countries sent a joint letter to the IOC.
Last December, the IOC allowed Russians and Belarusians to participate in the Paris Olympics as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, or who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in the 2024 Games. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
