The Organizing Committee of the Friendship Games called the IOC’s call for a boycott of the competition unconstructive
The Organizing Committee of the Friendship Games responded to the call of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for a boycott of the competition. RIA Novosti reports this.
According to the Russian side, such a position is unconstructive. “It is not aimed at the development of sports, which is facilitated by the emergence of new commercial formats of competitions with a serious organizational level and attractive conditions for athletes,” the statement says.
Earlier, the IOC called the Friendship Games a politicized event of the Russian government. “The IOC strongly urges all participants in the Olympic movement and all governments to refuse participation in or support for any initiatives aimed at the complete politicization of international sport,” the organization said.
The Friendship Games will take place in September 2024 in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. The tournament will include competitions in 33 summer Olympic and non-Olympic sports. In February, Russian Deputy Sports Minister Alexei Morozov said that representatives from 34 countries would take part in the tournament.
