Coach Koeman advises the Netherlands to stay away from the Promes case
The head coach of the Netherlands national team, Ronald Koeman, spoke about the players’ support for Spartak Moscow forward Quincy Promes, who was detained in Dubai. His words are quoted by De Telegraaf.
Earlier, Dutch national team player Memphis Depay expressed support for Promes, with whom he is friends, on social networks. “I wouldn’t do that myself. I didn’t talk to Memphis about it. Sometimes you can make your life a little easier by not doing things like that,” Koeman said. In his opinion, such behavior may cause criticism. The specialist advised the players to stay away from the Promes case.
On March 13, Promes was arrested in Dubai at the request of the Dutch prosecutor’s office. It was noted that the detention was related to the possibility of further extradition of the football player to the country.
On February 14, an Amsterdam court sentenced Promes in absentia to six years in prison for drug smuggling. In the summer of 2023, he received 18 months in prison in his homeland for attacking his brother with a knife. On February 29, Promes was detained at border control at Dubai Airport for being involved in an accident and leaving the scene. Later it was clarified that the football player would not be sentenced to prison in the UAE; he was to be punished with a fine.
