IOC Vice President Coates: about 40 Russians will be able to compete at the 2024 Olympics
Vice-President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) John Coates announced the expected number of Russian athletes at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. He is quoted by Reuters.
“They will not participate in any team sports and will not represent Russia. Everyone who is trained in Russian military clubs will not go. I don’t know, but obviously some athletes may refuse to participate,” he said. According to Coates, about 40 Russians will be able to compete at the 2024 Olympics.
Earlier, Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin assessed the likelihood of Russia boycotting the Games in Paris. “We must preserve the possibility of dialogue and compete as much as possible,” he said.
In December 2023, the IOC decided to admit Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris as individual neutral athletes. At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, or who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in the 2024 Games. In addition, representatives of team sports will miss the tournament.
