First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova named the consequences of allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Her words are quoted by Sport Express.
According to her, French President Emmanuel Macron will be forced to remove representatives of the countries. “They will blackmail for a long time, and then Macron will break down and say: “The whole world is asking me, so I don’t allow them.” Then there will be interviews with athletes who will say that they do not want to compete with the Russians,” she said.
On March 15, the President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), Stanislav Pozdnyakov, pointed out the negative criterion for the admission of Russian athletes to the Games from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which is associated with the condemnation of the SVO in Ukraine. Pozdnyakov wondered what exactly the IOC understands as indicators of support.
On December 8, 2023, the IOC announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Olympics in Paris. They will be able to take part in the tournament as Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN). At the same time, athletes who support a special operation in Ukraine, or who have connections with the armed forces or security agencies of Russia and Belarus will not be allowed to participate in the Games.
